Hailing from Dublin, Ireland, Villagers are an indie folk band founded in 2008. Created after the break-up of Conor O’Brien’s previous band, The Immediate, the first song for Villagers was written the very next day after waking up with a hangover.

Released in 2015, “Darling Arithmetic” is the third studio album from the band, reaching number one in the Irish album charts within its first week of release, and winning Best Album Award in the 2016 Ivor Novello Awards. Written, recorded, produced and mixed by O’Brien at his home in Dublin, the album has been cited by some as a departure from his usual sound, with nine mostly acoustic tracks resembling something more old-fashioned and folk-rock. Playing every instrument himself and mixing the record on his own, O’Brien has been heralded in his home country, with Tony Clayton-Lea of The Irish Times stating that the release “proves that O’Brien – stripped back and wilfully solo – is just as potent and pure.”.
